If you ride the local train north from the Shin Yamaguchi shinkansen station (on weekends this will be the rustic Steam Locomotive) it will take you to Tsuwano. This small castle town, nestled in a valley only 350 meters wide, affords a leisurely opportunity to observe Edo Period lifestyle and buildings. Then you can take a bus over the mountains to Hagi. From there, a short ride up the San'in train line will bring you to Masuda, where you can appreciate the famous Sesshu garden. This trip is famous among Japanese people as being a "golden triangle" tourist excursion

Nagato city is located in the northern area in Yamaguchi Prefecture and endowed with natures of sea and mountains. Omijima with the towering cliff and strange rocks on the blue sea. Yumoto hot spring and Tawarayama hot spring known as therapeutic baths from a long time ago are located in the mountain area. In Senzaki where Misuzu Kaneko, a poet of children's song was born and grown up, you can see her sensitivity in the "Misuzu Kaneko Museum" in restored condition of her house and on the "Misuzu Kaneko" street.

Hagi city

Terumoto Mori built the castle and established the local government in 1604. It has flourished as a castle town for 260 years until the local government is transferred to Yamaguchi. The ruin of Hagi Castle, samurai residences and tradesmen's houses in the Edo period are left now. Also as an original place of Meiji Restoration, it produced famous persons such as Shoin Yoshida, Shinsaku Takasugi, Hirobumi Ito, etc. The nature of Mt. Kasa facing the Japan Sea and Hagi-wares and Hagi-glasses are one of attraction in this town.

Tsuwano in the mountain area derives its name from "a field where the Japanese silverleaf grow". It was developed as a castle town in the Edo period and also the birthplace of Saishu and Ogai Mori from the end of the Shogunate to the Meiji Period. On the street where the clan school and samurai residences are left, carps swims in the canal. It is more beautiful when irises are blooming. It has a unique sightseeing spot such as Mitsumasa Anno Museum.

Masuda city

Masuda is located near the mouth of the pure Takatsu River and the once-flourishing castle town as a center of Iwami since Kamakura period. This town is also the place where Sesshu, a monk who was famous for drawing spent his last years and Kakinomoto-hitomaro, a poet of a Collection of a Myriad Leaves was born/spent his last years. We strongly recommend you to visit the Manpuku Temple/Ikou Temple containing the Sesshu Garden and The Sesshu Memorial Museum". The Todakakimoto Shrine is told to be built in his birthplace.
