If you stand in the middle of the bridge that spans the Kanmon Strait (sometimes
referred to as the "Bosporus of Japan") and face east, you can
see the Seto Inland Sea. Behind you to your left is the Sea of
Japan and to your right is the East China Sea. This area has always
been a gateway to the world and thus its no wonder that in the
19th century it formed the epicenter of the Meiji Revolution that
transformed Japan and brought it into the modern global community.

A new town with many historic stories and waterfront
Shimonoseki facing the Kanmon Channel located in the westernmost
point of Honshu. It has flourished as a calling port of Kitamae
ships in the Edo period and developed as an international
harbor in the Meiji period. You are never bored because there
are many sightseeing spots including some historic places
such as Akama Shrine, old western-style houses built in the
Meiji Period, Kanmon Bridge, popular aquarium "Kaikyokan",
Karato market, YUME Tower of a new symbol. Also this town
is proud of the most landing of lowfish in Japan. You should
not miss the seafood. Chofu that was a castle town with streets
in the Edo period is located in the eastern area of city.
